As the rainy season approaches, dengue is mostly going to be prevalent once again with mosquitoes having more opportunities to breed. This results in an increase of dengue cases as the Department of Health (DOH) tallied more than 50,000 people diagnosed with the disease in 2015.

Symptoms of the disease usually appear within 2 weeks after being infected. It's important to be aware of the signs of having dengue because when left untreated, it can be life-threatening. The disease is spread by the aedes aegypti mosquito. Typical signs of dengue include high fever, skin rashes, headaches, vomiting and diarrhea.

In order to be more aware, take a look at some of the signs of dengue that should not be ignored.

  • sudden onset of fever
  • fatigue and tiredness
  • intense headaches
  • joint and muscle pain
  • vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and pain in the abdomen

  • itching, rashes on the skin and blushed skin on the face and neck
  • heavy periods in women

Fever that is on and off may also indicate a sign of dengue. Therefore, it's important to visit a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Do not ignore these warning signs to avoid risk of a life-threatening disease.
